There have never been more innovative technologies available to the healthcare system. So why are so many patients, clinicians, and healthcare systems yet to experience their full potential?
Between the value offered by innovation and adoption lies hidden friction. It’s stalling growth and slowing progress toward better outcomes for patients.
The organizations that succeed will be those that understand where adoption gets stuck and help stakeholders overcome the barriers standing in their way.
Slow adoption is not for lack of innovation
MedTech innovation is accelerating. Investment remains strong, regulators are actively supporting emerging technologies, and more AI-enabled devices are entering the market than ever.
But adoption isn’t keeping pace. We can see this in diabetes care. Studies show that continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) improves glycemic control for adults with type 2 diabetes treated with basal insulin, yet uptake in routine care remains limited among eligible patients. The gap lies in adoption. The same dynamic is emerging in generative AI. A recent study found that two thirds of MedTech executives said their companies were implementing generative AI, yet only 20% were scaling solutions, and only 15% reported a positive P&L impact. This is another sign of how hard real-world adoption is across MedTech.
The hidden friction is human
When a MedTech innovation launches, the story is typically centered on the product itself. And for good reason - clinical evidence, performance data and technical specifications are essential foundations for adoption.
But payers, clinicians, nurses, patients and caregivers rarely experience innovations in the way they’re typically presented. When innovations are integrated well, their value is felt through reduced workload, shorter waits, earlier diagnoses and better outcomes. Wearables, for example, tell a similar story for patients: usage has grown rapidly, especially among people at risk of cardiovascular disease, but studies show that many users still do not share device data with clinicians, and clinical teams rarely integrate these into everyday decision-making. One recent analysis points to a striking gap: 78.4% of wearable users were willing to share their data with health care providers, yet only 26.5% had actually done so.
When innovations are introduced without sufficient consideration for the people implementing them, it results in additional administrative burden, disrupted workflows, inconsistent use and promising technologies being abandoned before they can demonstrate their value. That means MedTech companies are no longer competing on device performance alone. They’re competing on whether they can make innovation easier to understand, trust and adopt across the whole care system.
Every stakeholder needs a different story
The challenge is that different stakeholders need different reasons to change their behavior.
The most effective way to reduce friction is to take a human-centered approach, understanding what each group needs in order to adopt new technologies.
Clinicians need to know a solution will deliver in practice, not just in controlled studies. Nurses need training, support and reassurance that new technology won’t add to existing workflow pressures. Payers need confidence that investment will translate into proven value.
Meanwhile, patients and caregivers need clarity about how innovation will improve their experience of care.
While the barriers differ, the underlying need is the same: stakeholders must understand what an innovation means for them.
MedTech’s new battleground
Overcoming the friction preventing adoption requires a shift in how innovation is communicated. It needs to be more human.
The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) analysis underlines that AI is already embedded administratively across health systems, yet scaling clinically at the national level remains limited and slow. The barriers they identify are workflow disruption, training, and trust. These are organizational as well as human barriers. This means moving beyond broad product narratives to audience-specific proof-to-value stories that helps stakeholders understand why any innovation matters to them and why they should believe in it.
Human-centered communication is already one of MedTech's most important competitive advantages. In fact, it’s essential for the industry’s future, when every poorly adopted innovation risks adding to a collective sense of skepticism, making healthcare audiences even less willing to embrace the next breakthrough.
Success will belong not only to organizations that innovate, but to those that help healthcare systems understand, trust and adopt those innovations.
