Pharma is sick.
That was the deliberately provocative starting point for Pharmageddon Europe. Not because our industry lacks expertise, innovation or ambition, but because too often we fall back on familiar approaches that limit progress.
Over two days, a diverse and passionate group of people from across the industry came together to challenge the status quo, diagnose what's holding our industry back, and explore the interventions needed to move it forward.
While there were countless thought-provoking discussions and hands-on solve sessions, three themes stood out for us.
1. How strong ideas become safe ideas
Most organizations don't suffer from a lack of skill, creativity or good intentions. The challenge is translating those strengths into decisions, behaviors and actions that create lasting change.
As ideas move through planning processes, governance structures, reviews, approvals and alignment exercises, they often lose the very qualities that made them powerful in the first place. What started as a differentiated idea can gradually become watered down into something more familiar and ultimately less impactful.
Functions and rigorous guidelines exist in pharma for good reason and will continue to do so. The challenge is how we evolve the way we work to focus on outcomes and a common mission, rather than a series of rational decisions that ultimately lead to irrational outcomes.
2. AI, GEO and the evolving role of expertise
AI was never far from the conversation, but one of the most interesting discussions wasn't about the technology itself. It was about what happens when access to information fundamentally changes and knowledge becomes increasingly democratized.
Today, healthcare professionals and patients are increasingly turning to AI-powered tools to navigate complex topics, answer questions and synthesize information. This creates two important implications for pharma and life sciences.
First, organizations need to consider how they show up in AI-driven environments.
If AI is becoming a core gateway to information, how do we ensure that organizations, brands, products, therapeutic areas and scientific data are accurately represented in AI-generated responses? This is where Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) becomes increasingly important.
Success is no longer just about visibility in traditional search. It's about ensuring consistent, accurate and credible representation across the growing AI ecosystem.
Second, the role of our individual expert disciplines is evolving.
As healthcare professionals and patients come to conversations better informed, often having already engaged with AI-generated information, the function of Commercial Teams, Medical Affairs and MSLs must evolve too.
Rather than acting primarily as providers of information, we must focus on adding value as strategic partners and stewards. Helping audiences understand, contextualize and apply information is becoming just as important as information transfer.
What also became clear is that AI is not a substitute for critical thinking. As technology becomes more advanced and helps us work more efficiently, human judgment, creativity and genuinely human-centered communication become even more valuable.
3. Start with the audience
Perhaps the most important theme, and something we truly believe in, is the importance of staying close to our audiences. Do we genuinely understand their needs, attitudes, behaviors and the context in which they make decisions?
Real insight comes from listening, observing and appreciating the realities healthcare professionals and patients face every day. Combining real-time behavioral signals with deeper awareness of audience needs helps us develop initiatives that resonate, drive legitimate change and deliver a more connected experience at every stage of engagement. Unfortunately, this goal is missed all too often in favor of the reality of quarterly reporting cycles and a ‘launch and leave’ mindset. The result is that these key insights can be lost or deprioritized before they can be given the chance to influence future planning and decision-making to truly move the needle.
Ultimately, the organizations that prioritize staying close to their audiences will be best placed to stay relevant, build trust and deliver programs that address real needs rather than perceived ones.
A few final thoughts
Pharma is an incredible industry, and Pharmageddon was a great reminder of just how sophisticated, expert-led and ultimately life-changing this sector can be.
We're at a fascinating point in time, as audience expectations and technology both continue to evolve at pace. We predict that those who succeed will ride this wave, bracing innovation without losing sight of the people they serve, creating stronger brands, experiences and better outcomes for healthcare professionals and patients.
At Inizio Evoke, we believe that's what health more human™ is all about. We're passionate about helping organizations navigate this evolving landscape, while keeping people at the center of every decision.
